Missions

The Elderton Presbyterian Church is committed to advancing the Mission of Christ’s Church and proclaiming the Gospel throughout the world. Our congregation supports a number of missions locally, nationally, and internationally. We intentionally support Presbyterian related missions, but also seek out the opportunity to become involved in ecumenical ministries. Projects and proposals are submitted to our mission committee who reviews and recommends them to the session for approval and inclusion. Please keep these vital ministries in your prayers.

Synod of the Trinity

Our middle governing body of the PC, (U.S.A.), the Synod, which serves all of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and parts of eastern Ohio, supports programming for Presbyterian congregations beyond those offered by the local presbytery. The Synod offers scholarships for Presbyterian students based on academic achievement, need and disability. They also provide scholarships for members of small congregations to attend leadership development training and offer quality continuing education events for church leaders. Grants are also available from the Synod for individual churches in the area of Church Redevelopment and to presbyteries for New Church Development. The Synod of office is located in Camp Hill, Pa.

Camping Association of the Presbyteries of Northwestern Pennsylvania

Support for this Mission involves the two Presbyterian Camps in Western Pennsylvania, operated in partnership with Beaver Butler, Kiskiminetas, Lake Erie, and Shenango Presbyteries. Westminster Highlands is located in Emlenton, Pa., and Camp Lambec in Erie, Pa. Both camps offer family camp programming, retreat opportunities, and extensive summer camping for children. Our contributions are used for capital improvements at the camps, as determined by the Camp Board of Directors. Additional funding for scholarship aid for individual campers is also provided by the church from its operating budget.

Local Mission:

The Angel Tree

The Angel Tree mission is supported by a partnership of the church and Butterfly Hill Preschool. The program, in its sixth year, works with a local assistance organization to improve the Christmas season for families and individuals in need. Members of the congregation and families from Butterfly Hill program again supported this mission with generosity and Christian love.

Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commission

The Commission offers prevention, intervention, treatment, case management and recovery support services. Drug and alcohol problems are a major issue in our area. The drug issue is especially pervasive in rural communities and the fight to eliminate it needs to be supported.

Butterfly Hill Preschool

Butterfly Hill Preschool is a major mission emphasis of the church. With 26 years of faithful service to Elderton and the surrounding communities, Butterfly Hill offers a high quality educational experience to students from toddler to pre-kindergarten. It emphasizes a strong Christian based curriculum.

Elderton Church Community Foodbank

The Elderton Area Foodbank founded in 1983, is housed at the Elderton Presbyterian Church and provides food, dry goods, and hygiene products to area residents in need. The Foodbank is supported financially by all of the churches in the Elderton Ministerium and is administered by the staff of the Elderton Presbyterian Church.

Elderton Volunteer Fire Department

Provides emergency fire and rescue services to the surrounding community, as well as support for a variety of social functions.

Elderton Recreation Commission

Provides for maintenance of the parks and recreation program in the local community, including the renovation and operation of tennis courts, skate parks, deck hockey, baseball fields, playground equipment and picnic pavilions in the Elderton park. The commission also supports the local Little League and other youth activities.

Helping Hand Center, Rural Valley

This center is staffed by area church volunteers.  Clothing and household goods are provided to needy families.

Irish Rowe Day

This mission project provided direct benefit to individuals who are rebuilding their lives after experiencing addiction issues. Located in the nearby Indiana community, a facility has been created to provide supportive living space for individuals who are making sincere efforts to restore themselves to meaningful existence in society.

KESS Little League

KESS, a community program that helps children grow and prosper through sports programming. Members of our congregation have a rich tradition of involvement and participation in this organization. Many of our youth take part in programs and man of our adults are actively involved in leadership roles. A healthy and safe recreational opportunity is provided.

Little Library

Cooperation with the Kittanning library allows the Elderton Presbyterian Church to provide a "Little Free Library" for the benefit of area residents. The library box is located near the driveway entrance to the church, featuring books for children and adults. The honor system is the guiding principle for the service and the borrowing. The church provides influence to the books and content through the leadership of Butterfly Hill. Many of the works provided have a strong Christian message.

Presbyterian Disaster Relief

The Elderton Presbyterian Church annually collects Clean Up Buckets to be distributed through Presbyterian Disaster Relief and Church World Service, to disaster sites around the world.
